Ballari Road crossings upgraded at Byatarayanapura and Kodigehalli

NHAI has installed pedestrian refuge islands, marked crossings and upgraded footpaths at two junctions on NH-44 in north Bengaluru.

NHAI says about 80% of junction-safety work is complete at Byatarayanapura and Kodigehalli on Ballari Road. Jakkur work will follow Metro construction.

People crossing Ballari Road at Byatarayanapura and Kodigehalli can use newly marked crossings and refuge islands rather than crossing the highway’s main lanes and service roads in one stretch.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has installed islands in the median and between the carriageway and service roads, along with guard rails, reflective studs, signboards and improved footpaths. It says roughly 80% of the work is complete at the two north Bengaluru junctions on NH-44.

NHAI has allocated Rs 20 lakh for work at each junction. The works include about 133 metres of pedestrian crossings, 240 sq m of refuge space and 1,600 sq m of new footpaths, along with speed-calming measures and fresh road markings.

Bengaluru Traffic Police data shows that Byatarayanapura and Kodigehalli recorded 11 and six fatalities, respectively, between 2019 and 2023. Pedestrians accounted for nearly 30% of those deaths.

NHAI plans a third junction improvement at Jakkur near GKVK after Metro construction under way there is complete.
