Sion railway bridge reopening targeted for September 30

The rebuilt Sion railway bridge is targeted to reopen to vehicular traffic by September 30, more than two years after the old bridge closed.

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde inspected the work on September 2. Central Railway has completed deck-slab concreting on both girders and is finishing crash barriers and the concrete wearing coat. The BMC and Central Railway are aiming to complete the remaining work by the end of the month.

The 112-year-old bridge near Sion station was declared unsafe and closed to vehicles on August 1, 2024. Its reconstruction is part of Central Railway’s work on the fifth and sixth lines between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Kurla under MUTP-2. The reopening target is ahead of the project’s February 2027 deadline.

Central Railway is rebuilding the bridge within railway limits, while the BMC is strengthening and renewing the approach roads, including the link between LBS Road and Sant Rohidas Road in Dharavi. A pedestrian subway on LBS Road opened on February 20, the rebuilt Sant Rohidas Road subway opened on July 14, and a pedestrian bridge near Sion station has also opened.
