Two balconies, ground-floor slab collapse at Sushant Lok-3 house

Kanhaiya Yadav and a private contractor were inspecting cracks in a second-floor balcony at house number 52, Block B1, Sushant Lok-3, when the slab collapsed.

The falling concrete struck the first-floor balcony below, bringing it down, and damaged the projecting slab on the ground floor. The projections on all three levels fell within seconds. Yadav was taken to a private hospital, and the contractor was also being treated.

A family inside the first-floor home was not injured because the balcony fell outward. The ground-floor residents were away. A team from Sector 56 police station and resident welfare association members reached the house.

Pawan Yadav, the RWA president, said many homes in Sushant Lok-2 and Sushant Lok-3 are 30 to 35 years old and need structural maintenance. He said water accumulating on rooftops for prolonged periods can cause dampness and weaken balconies and projecting slabs.

District Town Planner (Enforcement) Amit Madholia said the maintenance of privately owned houses does not fall under the department’s direct intervention.
