Delhi exhibition pairs photographs of Tokyo then and now

Tokyo appears in black-and-white street scenes from 1936 and in digital-age images from the 2010s in *Tokyo Before/After*, a photography exhibition being presented in Delhi.

The travelling show brings together around 80 photographs from the 1930s and 1940s and the 2010s. The images record changes in Tokyo’s streets, people, infrastructure and visual character.

Works include Kineo Kuwabara’s *Tokyo in the 11th Year of the Showa* (1936), Natsumi Hayashi’s 2011 series *Today’s Levitation*, and Shintaro Sato’s *Risen in the East on the Asakusa* (2011).

At the preview, Koji Sato, director general of The Japan Foundation, said Delhi and Tokyo shared people’s affection for their cities and their historical and cultural assets. Vivek Aggarwal, secretary in the Ministry of Culture, recalled seeing Tokyo’s older cityscape coexist with newer development, including what he described as “frugal yet functional infrastructure.”
