Ulsoor Lake kalyani to receive over 1 lakh Ganesha idols

Ulsoor Lake’s 5.5-metre-deep kalyani will open for Ganesha idol immersion on September 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 27 and 28.

The Bengaluru Central City Corporation expects more than one lakh idols at the site during the 15-day Gowri-Ganesha festival. Immersion will not be allowed on the remaining days, when teams will clean the kalyani, remove idol remnants and collect festival waste.

The nearly 650-square-foot kalyani is intended to keep immersion activity out of the lake itself. Four mobile tanks around the lake will take smaller idols, while two cranes will operate round the clock at the main site. A separate queue has been planned for smaller idols, and footpaths and approach routes will be barricaded and regulated.

CCTV cameras, ambulances, drinking water, mobile toilets, lighting and solid-waste collection teams are also part of the arrangements. Police and other departments will coordinate traffic and law-and-order measures.

Only eco-friendly idols are permitted under the city’s plaster-of-Paris idol ban.
