University of Bristol opens Powai campus with data science courses

The University of Bristol has opened its first international campus at Cignus Powai, opposite IIT Bombay, offering programmes in data science, finance, fintech and immersive arts.

The Mumbai Enterprise Campus welcomed its inaugural batch after receiving University Grants Commission approval in June. The university is offering a three-year BSc in data science and one-year postgraduate courses in finance and investment, financial technology with data science, and immersive arts. It said the courses draw on degrees offered in Bristol but have been adapted for the Indian context.

Vice-chancellor and president Evelyn Welch said the campus would support research, innovation and knowledge exchange, while offering a Bristol education focused on future opportunities and challenges.

Four students on the University of Bristol-Government of Maharashtra scholarship attended the opening. The scheme provides a full tuition-fee waiver through their studies and internship opportunities at the Chief Minister’s Office. The first cohort also completed a three-week pre-semester programme through the Bristol Global Futures Lab, with industry-led sessions and experiential learning activities.

At the inauguration, the university conferred an honorary degree on writer, translator, journalist and theatre critic Shanta Gokhale, a Bristol graduate from 1962.
