Urvashi Cinema, a Bengaluru fixture since 1976, is set to close after 50 years.

For generations of filmgoers, the single-screen theatre was part of the ritual of a first-day-first-show: fan celebrations, whistles and packed audiences gathered around new releases. It screened blockbusters featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Yash and Rajinikanth, while also becoming a go-to venue for major Hollywood films.

The closure removes another familiar address from Bengaluru’s single-screen cinema culture, where the shared experience in the auditorium was often as central as the film itself. Urvashi’s run began in 1976 and will now end after five decades.
