Vashi: NMMC suspends two nurses after patient dies; inquiry underway

Gopiram Bhivaji Khadse, 50, died on Thursday morning at Hiranandani Fortis Hospital after he was transferred there from NMMC Hospital in Vashi as his condition worsened.

Khadse, a Vashi resident, was admitted to the civic hospital on August 31 with fever, dizziness and weakness. He was diagnosed with dengue and falciparum malaria and was referred to Fortis under the NMMC quota on September 1. He received ventilator support, oxygen and other supportive care there.

His family alleges that staff at NMMC Hospital administered an expired intravenous saline bottle on August 31, after which his condition worsened. After his death, family members protested outside the hospital, seeking action against those responsible, compensation and a government job for a family member.

NMMC Medical Officer of Health Dr Rajesh Mhatre confirmed that two nurses have been suspended. Medical Superintendent Dr Ravindra Mhatre said a post-mortem has been initiated and that the inquiry committee's findings will guide further action. NMMC Health Committee Chairman Dr Jayaji Nath said it has not been conclusively established whether the alleged saline lapse caused Khadse's deterioration.
