A west Delhi resident was drawn from a dating app into purported online-store investments and later cryptocurrency transfers, losing more than ₹80 lakh.
The man connected with a woman on a dating app, who promised substantial returns from an online store. After smaller initial payments, he was persuaded to make larger cryptocurrency investments and was then asked to send more money to regain access to his account.
A west Delhi resident lost more than ₹80 lakh after a dating-app conversation led to investments in a purported online store and, later, cryptocurrency.
The woman he met on the app promised significant profits from the online business. The resident first made smaller transfers before being persuaded to put larger sums into cryptocurrency.
When problems emerged with access to the account, he was asked to send further money to restore it and resolve the stated issues. The alleged fraud involved a sequence of payments rather than a single transfer, with the promised returns used to encourage larger investments.
Delhi has seen other complaints involving dating apps and financial deception, including an alleged ₹1.30 lakh case in which two women were arrested. Residents considering online investment offers should be particularly cautious when they are directed towards cryptocurrency transfers or asked to pay additional sums to unlock an account.
