Western Railway says Mumbai division collected 5.2 tonnes in cleanliness drive

More than 4,100 people took a cleanliness pledge during Western Railway’s four-day Swachhata Hi Seva campaign, which collected over 5.2 tonnes of segregated waste across the Mumbai Central Division, the railway said.

The September 17–20 drive covered stations, depots, railway colonies, health units and maintenance sites. In Mumbai, teams carried out deep-cleaning work at the EMU Carshed at Mumbai Central. Awareness programmes, including rallies and street plays, were held around Bandra station, while joint shramdaan drives took place at Mira Road and Bhayandar stations. The railway’s Personnel Department also conducted tree-planting and cleaning work at Borivali Railway Colony.

Across the division, Western Railway said it identified 83 garbage-vulnerable locations and completed improvement work at 23 of them, covering nearly 1,387 square metres. It reported removing 1.19 metric tonnes of accumulated waste from those sites, beautifying eight reclaimed locations and creating four Swachhata-themed selfie points.

The campaign also included programmes at 30 schools and educational institutions on waste-management rules and four-way source segregation.
