Why Does Every Delhi Neighbourhood Suddenly Have a Specialty Coffee Shop?

At this point, “let’s grab coffee” is less of a question and more of a personality trait. Coffee has now become the default plan, for first dates, post-work catch-ups, Sunday mornings and those afternoons when you just need a reason to leave the house. Somewhere between the flat white orders, laptop afternoons and long conversations that outlast the coffee itself, a cup of coffee has turned into a way of life.

And lately, Delhi seems to be doing it with much better coffee. Specialty cafes are now everywhere in neighbourhoods across the city, serving carefully sourced beans, precise pour-overs and experimental brews that go well beyond the familiar cappuccino. Coffee is becoming something you linger over, something you try to understand, compare and, occasionally, build your entire weekend around. What is specialty coffee? Think of it as the difference between simply drinking coffee and becoming slightly obsessed with it. Specialty coffee invites you to look a little closer at what's in your cup: where the beans came from, how they were grown and processed, how they were roasted and what flavours they bring out. You might start noticing whether your coffee tastes nutty and chocolatey or bright and fruity, have opinions on roasts you never knew you had, and spend far too long reading the menu before ordering. Your usual coffee might still win in the end, but there is always the temptation to try something new.

I will almost always choose coffee when given the option. Going out with friends? Coffee. A long catch-up? Coffee. Someone offers me another drink? I will probably still ask if they have a good cappuccino. I don't need four cups a day, at least, that's what I keep telling myself but if there's an opportunity to drink coffee, why exactly should I skip it?

Perhaps that’s why places like these are becoming so easy to fall for. For people who treat finding a new cafe as a perfectly legitimate weekend activity, there is always another menu to explore and another cup to obsess over. And while I'm still working on cutting down my own consumption, I have absolutely no intention of stopping my search for the next really good coffee.
