10-foot sinkhole at IFFCO Chowk diverts Delhi-bound traffic via Sukhrali

A 10-foot-wide sinkhole has opened on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway service road at IFFCO Chowk, cutting off the route towards the U-turn flyover for some Delhi-bound commuters.

Police have cordoned off the damaged portion. Vehicles arriving from MG Road and IFFCO Chowk and heading towards Delhi are being directed to take a U-turn at Sukhrali before continuing towards the capital. The disruption follows the service-road closure at IFFCO Chowk.

GMDA and NHAI teams are examining an old 1,000mm-diameter GMDA master sewer beneath the road, which carries sewage to the Behrampur treatment plant. Preliminary inspection found leakage in the line, though officials said the cause of the cave-in will be determined after the area is dewatered and the pipe is inspected.

The line has not undergone cured-in-place pipe rehabilitation. Officials will assess the damage before deciding the repair method and timeline; the road is to be restored after the underground utility is fixed.
