After 75mm of rain, Gurgaon’s drainage spending faces another monsoon test

A Class II student who left a Sector 47 school at 12.30pm reached home in Sector 51 only at 8.30pm on Monday, after heavy rain flooded Gurgaon’s roads.

About 75mm of rain fell between 8am and 5pm. Sohna Road, Golf Course Road, MG Road, the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, Rajiv Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, IFFCO Chowk and Udyog Vihar were among the affected stretches. School buses moved slowly through flooded routes, while some parents waded through water to reach their children. Several buses were trapped for hours near Subhash Chowk.

A commuter travelling from Sector 48 to catch a 4.10pm train from New Delhi Railway Station abandoned the trip after his cab covered only 500 metres on Sohna Road in nearly two hours.

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram has said its three major master drains were desilted and work at 158 vulnerable waterlogging points was completed in June. Yet a Sector 102-102A road redeveloped last year for Rs 11.8 crore, including drainage work, also saw recurring waterlogging.

As of July 29, 209 of MCG’s 427 sanctioned posts were filled. The administration has asked offices, government departments and educational institutions to shift to work from home or online classes while drainage and road work continues.
