BMC plans full-supply days in Mumbai areas reporting shortages

Mumbai neighbourhoods reporting a high number of water-shortage complaints may receive full supply on designated days if the BMC confirms local supply gaps.

BMC officials will map distribution units and sub-zones with the most complaints, then compare local demand with the volume reaching each area. Where supply is insufficient, the civic body plans to schedule specific full-supply days. Where the available volume is adequate, officials will examine the local distribution network for leaks.

The plan follows site inspections ordered during the continuing 10% water cut. The cut, imposed on May 15, remains in place even as Mumbai’s seven reservoirs hold 13.95 lakh million litres, or 96% of their combined capacity.

The BMC supplies around 4,100 million litres a day from the seven reservoirs, against estimated city demand of around 4,600 million litres. Officials are monitoring reservoir levels ahead of October 1 and consider 14.47 lakh million litres necessary to supply Mumbai through the year. Corporators have sought a rollback during Ganeshotsav, scheduled from September 14 to 25, but the administration has ruled out lifting the cut for now.
