Delhi has no immediate plan for congestion charges, says Khattar

Union housing and urban affairs minister Manohar Lal Khattar said Delhi has no immediate plan to levy congestion charges on private vehicles entering high-traffic areas.

“It might be happening in cities elsewhere in the world, but it is not part of our planning,” Khattar said on Thursday, adding that there was no plan to implement the charge right now.

The draft Master Plan of Delhi 2047 proposes identifying congestion-pricing zones through consultations between road-owning agencies, the transport department and traffic police. It lists areas around transit-oriented development nodes, the Walled City heritage zone and the metropolitan city centre as possible locations, and suggests RFID-based implementation.

The draft also recommends dynamic parking charges tied to peak hours and congestion levels. It proposes limiting public parking at work centres, markets, entertainment venues and cultural hubs, particularly where public transport access is high.
