Delhi road-network plan expected in four months under Master Plan 2047

D Thara, secretary in the Union housing and urban affairs ministry’s department of capital development, said Delhi’s complete road network is expected to be mapped under a grid plan within the next three to four months.

The proposed plan is part of work to implement the Delhi Master Plan 2047. Thara said Delhi can no longer rely primarily on acquiring large tracts of land, laying out sites and then building infrastructure.

Instead, the plan envisages partnership-based development, including land pooling. Landowners would contribute land needed for roads, utilities, green areas and reorganisation while retaining developed plots. The Delhi Development Authority would invest in infrastructure, including roads and water supply.

The planning framework divides the city into acquired and planned areas, alongside policy-led zones for town planning schemes, transit-oriented development and low-density areas. Higher density is planned along Metro corridors, Thara said, while low-density areas are intended to form green buffers and could house institutions such as universities, schools and research centres.

Thara also referred to a proposed park-connector network and said the Urban Extension Road is being used as a logistics hub.
