Gurgaon sanitation strike enters day 27; waste builds up at key sites

Sanitation workers burned an effigy of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini at Agrasen Chowk on Old Railway Road on Tuesday, the 27th day of Gurgaon’s sanitation strike.

Waste has accumulated at Sadar Market, Sikanderpur, Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road and Golf Course Extension Road. In Islampur village, resident Archana Gulati said dumping had persisted along the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, particularly near the underpass before Subhash Chowk.

The Municipal Employees Union, Haryana, is seeking an end to contractual sanitation and sewer work, the filling of vacant regular posts, and the regularisation of contractual municipal and fire employees. Union president Basant Kumar said workers were being compelled towards an indefinite protest.

Municipal officials said the state government would take a policy decision on the workers’ demands. The civic body is deploying outsourced workers to clear accumulated waste.

The union said it would decide its next course of action by 2pm on Wednesday, following a meeting with Urban Local Bodies department officials in Panchkula on Monday.
