IIT Bombay student’s phone, CCTV footage sent for forensic review in death probe

Mumbai Crime Branch has sent IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode’s phone and campus CCTV footage for forensic analysis as it investigates the circumstances of his death.

Police said the 22-year-old was allegedly caught copying at about 12.40pm during an examination on September 18. He returned to his hostel, spoke to several friends, and was found dead in his room later that evening. Investigators said he spoke to a female friend at around 2.30pm and expressed regret about the examination and the alleged copying incident.

The Crime Branch has recorded statements from more than 25 people, including students, friends and hostel staff. Wakode’s iPhone has been sent to the Kalina forensic laboratory; police are also seeking information linked to his WhatsApp account and may approach Apple if needed.

CCTV footage from the institute has also been sent for analysis. The investigation includes allegations in an FIR filed by Wakode’s father, who alleged caste-based harassment by professor Suryanarayana Doolla. Police had not yet recorded Doolla’s statement.
