World Trade Center Mumbai marks Sheshrao Wankhede’s 112th birth anniversary

World Trade Center Mumbai paid floral tributes to its founder president, Sheshrao Krishnarao Wankhede, on his 112th birth anniversary.

The centre said Wankhede, who lived from 1914 to 1988, was a freedom fighter, lawyer, Maharashtra politician and cricket administrator. He served as Maharashtra’s finance and industry minister, Speaker of the state Legislative Assembly, and represented India at the United Nations General Assembly, it said. Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium is named after him.

Capt. Somesh Batra, vice chairman of MVIRDC World Trade Center Mumbai, said Wankhede had recognised the need to connect Indian enterprises with international markets. Ramola Mahajani, Wankhede’s daughter, recalled his belief that institutions should serve society over generations.

MVIRDC World Trade Center Mumbai said it would continue its work on international trade and investment, while supporting MSMEs and entrepreneurs.
