Gurugram may pause Sheetla Mata Mandir Road revamp to assess master drain

Knee-deep water on Sheetla Mata Mandir Road during recent heavy rain has prompted GMDA to reconsider the order of work on its proposed Rs 20 crore road makeover.

The authority is exploring an increase in the capacity of the Leg-2 master stormwater drain, which runs alongside parts of the road. The drain begins in Sector 27 and eventually connects to the Najafgarh drain, passing through areas including Sector 29, Sector 41, NH8, Atul Kataria Chowk, Ashok Vihar, Dharampur village and Sector 107.

GMDA had invited bids in April to redevelop roughly 3 km from Atul Kataria Chowk to the Sector 3 junction. The plan includes stronger carriageways, surface-drain improvements, footpaths and landscaping. Bid deadlines were extended three times after limited agency participation.

A consultant will be hired to prepare a detailed project report on the drain’s existing capacity, peak-monsoon handling and the work needed. GMDA has not formally paused the road tender, but will decide whether both projects can run together.

The road is about 30 metres wide. If the drain needs widening, GMDA may have to alter the road profile rather than dig up a newly rebuilt stretch later. The review follows GMDA’s recent drain and pumping measures.
