IFFCO Chowk road cave-in: GMDA drains sewage before sewer repairs

The IFFCO Chowk service road remains barricaded as GMDA works to drain sewage from the cave-in site before assessing the sewer line beneath it.

The sinkhole, first about 10 feet wide, grew to more than 30 feet within hours after the road caved in on Tuesday. The 1,000mm GMDA master sewer carries sewage from DLF-2, MG Road and IFFCO Chowk towards the Behrampur sewage treatment plant. GMDA is diverting flow to an alternate manhole to limit further erosion, while pumps remove water from the affected stretch.

CEO PC Meena said engineers will inspect the pipeline once the area is cleared, with repair work to follow as a priority. NHAI will restore the road after the sewer line is repaired.

Commuters from MG Road and IFFCO Chowk heading towards Delhi or Sukhrali face restrictions around the service road shut after the cave-in. Traffic towards Delhi is being routed through a U-turn at Sukhrali.

GMDA also briefly shut water supply to inspect an underground pipeline. It found no damage and resumed supply from the Basai water treatment plant around 1am on Wednesday, though residents in DLF-1 and Sushant Lok-1 reported disruption in the morning.
