Karnataka schools told to hold Rajyotsava events on Sunday, November 1

Government, aided and unaided primary and high schools must mark Kannada Rajyotsava on November 1, even though it falls on a Sunday.

The Karnataka school education and literacy department has directed schools across the state, including Bengaluru, to organise Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations on November 1. The circular says state festivals cannot be deferred because of a holiday.

Bengaluru’s government, aided and unaided primary and high schools have been told to hold Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations on Sunday, November 1.

The direction applies across Karnataka and appears in a circular dated October 15 from the office of the commissioner for school education and literacy. It asks officials to ensure schools organise the celebrations.

The circular says national and state festivals must be observed respectfully on their designated dates under existing rules. It adds that state celebrations cannot be postponed because the day is a holiday.

School Education and Literacy Minister Madhu Bangarappa said Rajyotsava should not be ignored. “This is our festival, a day of pride,” he said.

Schools will therefore need to schedule their Rajyotsava programmes for November 1 rather than move them to the preceding or following school day.
