MCD seals three unauthorised dhobi ghats in Old Delhi

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi sealed three unauthorised dhobi ghats in the Old Delhi Zone after inspections identified environmental compliance lapses.

MCD sealed three unauthorised dhobi ghats in Old Delhi and began action to seek utility disconnections over wastewater and compliance lapses.

Three unauthorised dhobi ghats in the Old Delhi Zone have been sealed as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) steps up enforcement against untreated wastewater entering drains and water bodies connected to the Yamuna.

The action followed a review chaired by MCD commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar. Inspections at dhobi ghats across Delhi identified deficiencies in effluent treatment plant operations, mandatory Consent to Operate permissions from the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), and the use of soaps and detergents meeting Bureau of Indian Standards norms.

MCD has issued show-cause and compliance notices to facilities found in default. It has also informed BSES and the Delhi Jal Board as it begins the process of seeking disconnection of electricity and water connections at establishments found to be in violation.

Operators have been directed to stop releasing untreated wastewater, use BIS-compliant detergents and follow DPCC regulations. MCD said it will monitor authorised facilities and may take further action with police and local authorities.
