Old Delhi readies its rooftops and bazaars for Independence Day

Purani Dilli is dressing itself in orange, white and green for Independence Day, from the cramped bazaars around Jama Masjid to the rooftops above them.

Vendors are selling tricolour caps, bangles, dupattas, T-shirts, ribbons and scarves, while flags have appeared on carts, balconies, windows and water tanks. On 15 August, residents traditionally gather after the Red Fort programme for music, kite-flying and rooftop celebrations. Patriotic songs play through loudspeakers as young people take to the terraces with kites in the afternoon.

After sunset, fireworks and Chinese lanterns are part of the neighbourhood’s festive skyline, alongside small rooftop parties. Security is expected to be tight around Jama Masjid during the morning programme; Delhi has also stepped up Independence Day security measures across the city.

Light showers are forecast for Delhi on Independence Day, which may shape plans for open-air celebrations and kite-flying.
