Putin arrives in Delhi ahead of Modi meeting and BRICS summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi on Thursday, beginning a visit that includes a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday and the BRICS Leaders’ Summit this weekend.

Modi and Putin are expected to discuss cooperation in defence, energy and technology. The two leaders last met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek last week, where Modi called for an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.

Putin is also scheduled to address the annual BRICS Business Forum plenary and visit the Innoprom exhibition with Modi. He is expected to meet other leaders on the summit sidelines, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

The summit will be held at Bharat Mandapam on September 12 and 13. Delhi has declared September 11 a holiday, while traffic restrictions planned for the summit are already in force across key routes.
