Six dead after Satya Niketan PG building collapses; rescue work continues

Yuvraj, a student, was among at least six people killed when a student PG building in Satya Niketan collapsed on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency calls from near the South Campus market came in around 1.34pm. Delhi Police, the NDRF, Delhi Fire Service, DDMA and ambulance teams began pulling people from the debris; rescue work continued late into the night for others feared trapped. The building had operated as student accommodation and was more than four decades old, police said. Earlier rescue efforts had to proceed carefully because the floors had collapsed one over another.

Ten injured people were taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where four were declared brought dead and another died during treatment. Students Abhishek, Neeraj and Aditya were reported stable there. Two injured labourers, Asghar Ali and Ayan, were being treated at AIIMS Trauma Centre and Safdarjung Hospital respectively.

Police suspect repair and renovation work in the ground floor and basement may have led to the collapse. An FIR has been registered against the building owner and others, and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered a magisterial inquiry.
