Delhi-NCR: GRAP Stage 1 takes effect as air quality enters poor band

Delhi-NCR has entered the poor air-quality band, triggering restrictions on open burning, polluting vehicles and the use of certain fuels at eateries.

CAQM has enforced GRAP Stage 1 across Delhi-NCR as air quality entered the AQI 201-300, or poor, range, with curbs on dust, smoke and vehicle pollution.

Delhi-NCR’s air quality has entered the ‘poor’ category, and the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has enforced Stage 1 of the Graded Response Action Plan across the region.

The measures prohibit the open burning of biomass and municipal waste. Hotels, restaurants and open eateries cannot use coal or firewood in tandoors; they may use gas, electricity or other clean-fuel appliances instead.

Overaged petrol and diesel vehicles are barred from plying. Authorities may stop, impound or penalise visibly polluting vehicles.

Trucks without a Delhi destination must use the Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways. Interstate buses from neighbouring and other listed states may enter Delhi-NCR only if they are electric, CNG-powered or run on BS-VI diesel.

Construction and demolition sites of 500 square metres or more must register on the state portal and meet dust-monitoring requirements. Sites must transport and store waste under cover.

Diesel generators cannot be used as a routine power source, except for limited essential services including hospitals, Metro operations, railway stations, water pumping and telecommunications.

CAQM has advised residents to avoid idling at red lights, keep pollution certificates current, and use public transport or carpool where possible.
