Anupam Sud retrospective opens at NGMA, New Delhi, on October 23

NGMA will trace printmaker Anupam Sud’s work, from her early years to decades of practice in Delhi and beyond, in a month-long exhibition.

NGMA will show Anupam Sud’s sketches, paintings, watercolours and prints in a month-long New Delhi retrospective from October 23.

The National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi will open a month-long retrospective of 82-year-old artist Anupam Sud on October 23.

The exhibition will include sketches, paintings, watercolours and prints from Sud’s student years, her time at London’s Slade School of Art and her later decades of practice. It will be the first retrospective to show her prints alongside her other artistic work.

Sud studied at Delhi Polytechnic, later the College of Art, from 1962. She joined Group 8, a printmaking collective formed by her professor and mentor Jagmohan Chopra in 1968. Chopra also set up a makeshift studio at his home, where artists including Sud could continue working after college.

Sud’s locally built printing press still stands at the Delhi Silpi Chakra. The exhibition places her work in the context of the city’s printmaking networks, including Group 8 and the Delhi Silpi Chakra.

Archana Khare-Ghose has curated the show, which Dhoomimal Gallery is presenting. A book on Sud’s life, with essays by artists, contemporaries and printmakers, will also be released during the exhibition.
