Queues at NGEF Signal are making commuters wait through at least two light cycles on Old Madras Road, with longer delays on Suranjan Das Road.
Signal waits near NGEF Junction are delaying Old Madras Road commuters, with pedestrians and Suranjan Das Road traffic also affected.
Commuters on Old Madras Road are waiting through at least two signal cycles near NGEF Junction, according to Deeksha C., a regular user of the route. She said waits near the junction can run to 15 or 20 minutes, while alternative roads are also congested.
The bottlenecks centre on NGEF Signal and roads feeding Old Madras Road, including Suranjan Das Road, 80 Feet Road and 100 Feet Road. On Suranjan Das Road, commuters can wait through three or four cycles where the green phase lasts under 40 seconds. A 90-second green light on Old Madras Road does not clear the queues, she said.
Traffic police officers said signals on Old Madras Road have been synchronised, but ambulances using the corridor often require manual signal control. Pedestrians at Suranjan Das Junction have barely 10 seconds to cross, while turning traffic converges on Kallapalli Road. Police also reported wrong-way driving on one-way stretches during peak hours.
A skywalk has been proposed because of pedestrian movement near S.V. Road Metro station. The junction is also listed for improvement under the Suraksha 75 project, but work has not begun.
