Old Gurugram food walk: doda barfi, gajak and omelettes

Doda barfi is a cooler-month stop in Gurugram’s old town. Cut into thick brown pieces and flecked with almonds and cashews, the sweet is made from sprouted wheat cooked in desi ghee. Mithai shops in Sadar Bazar and Jacobpura, including Om Sweets, Sham Sweets and Harish Bakery, sell it.

Sadar Bazar also has gajak shops. At Sonu Namkeen Bhandar, cooks from Morena in Madhya Pradesh prepare gajak with wooden hammers. Shops in the area sell til patti, gur khasta, mungphali patti, kaju gajak and choora wale laddu. Many gajak stalls are temporary and usually begin appearing in October.

At New Colony Mor, French Omelette lists 28 omelette varieties, including a Hariyali omelette with herbs and tofu and one called Fat Free. In Sadar Bazar’s Apna Bazar complex, Manbir’s first-floor stall serves ginger-infused chai overlooking the market corridor.
