Delhi: Barapullah-III traffic backs up after Mayur Vihar entry reopens

Traffic built up on the new Mayur Vihar Phase-I–AIIMS corridor after its Mayur Vihar entry reopened at about 11am on Thursday.

Traffic built up on Barapullah-III after the Mayur Vihar Phase-I entry reopened. Police said a rapid influx from NH-24 and DND caused the delays.

Sanjay Bhargava reached the new Barapullah-III corridor at Mayur Vihar Phase-I on Thursday morning to find its entry barricaded, although the route appeared open on Google Maps.

The barrier was removed at about 11am, but traffic soon backed up towards Mayur Vihar. Exits towards DND and Ashram also slowed as drivers moved onto the newly inaugurated elevated link between Mayur Vihar Phase-I and AIIMS.

Traffic police said no accident or vehicle breakdown had caused the congestion. Instead, traffic from NH-24 and DND shifted quickly to the corridor; officials estimated that nearly one lakh vehicles entered the stretch in a short period. While NH-24 and DND remained relatively clear, the Barapullah route towards JLN Stadium slowed as vehicles moved towards Ring Road.

Ishmeet said a 10km trip took nearly 90 minutes, forcing her to leave via DND and return towards ITO through the older Mayur Vihar flyover route. Officials said the AIIMS-to-Mayur Vihar carriageway was expected to open later on Thursday, which they hoped would distribute traffic in both directions.
