Western Railway officer’s Marathi book traces Gandhi’s journeys by train

Ganesh Manohar Kulkarni, a chief loco inspector (safety) with Western Railway, will release his Marathi book *Railway Aani Gandhi* at a literary conclave in Thane on October 2.

The 200-page book examines Mahatma Gandhi’s journeys across India during the freedom movement and the role of railways in his public life. Nashik-based Shabda Malhar Prakashan has published the book.

Kulkarni, who joined Western Railway in 1990, writes that Gandhi used train compartments for correspondence, writing and meetings with colleagues. His journeys also drew people to railway stations to see him or watch his train pass.

Gujarati writer and activist Ramesh Oza said Gandhi recognised the railways’ reach across communities and geographies, and used them alongside the printing press in challenging British rule. Translator Uma Kulkarni and writer Sarang Darshane will speak about the book at the Thane event.
