Mumbai: MRVC task force to study rail, metro and RRTS expansion

Maharashtra has formed an MRVC-led task force to assess rail, metro and Regional Rapid Transit System expansion across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The panel will assess rail, metro and RRTS options for MMR and other Maharashtra cities, including semi-high-speed links between major cities.

Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation chairman and managing director Vilas Sopan Wadekar will lead a state task force on future rail-based transport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The panel will assess railway expansion, metro corridors and Regional Rapid Transit System options, weighing operational fit, technical feasibility and financial viability. It will also examine the feasibility of semi-high-speed rail services between two major cities.

The task force follows an October 7 meeting chaired by the Urban Development Department’s additional chief secretary, where officials discussed the need for different rail systems in different parts of Maharashtra. MRVC chief manager for planning Sanjay Kumar will serve as member secretary.

Representatives from the Urban Development Department, Maha-Metro, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation and MMRDA are on the committee. CIDCO and Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation will participate as invitees, alongside planning bodies from Pune, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Nagpur.

The task force will submit its report and recommendations to the Maharashtra government. No new route or service has been announced.
