Delhi Ramlila: 3D at Netaji Subhash Place, handmade sets at Mandi House

Broadway Ramlila runs in Netaji Subhash Place until October 19, while Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra’s ‘Shri Ram’ plays at Mandi House through November 1.

Broadway Ramlila at Netaji Subhash Place uses 3D visuals and more than 100 performers until October 19. ‘Shri Ram’ at Mandi House runs until November 1.

More than 100 performers take the stage at Netaji Subhash Place for Broadway Ramlila, a three-hour retelling of the Ramayana that uses 3D visuals, sets and 20 original soundtracks. Running from October 14 to 19, the production centres on the dilemmas of Kaikeyi, Dashrath and Ram under the theme ‘Charitron Ka Adhyayan — The Study of Characters’.

Rajender Mittal created the production, which Shashidharan Nair directs. Actor Sourabh Raaj Jain voices a present-day grandfather telling the story to Luv and Kush. The music includes voices by Udit Narayan and Kailash Kher.

Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra’s ‘Shri Ram’ is being performed daily at 6:30pm at its Open Air Theatre on Copernicus Marg, Mandi House. The two-hour-and-15-minute dance-drama follows Ram from his birth and exile to Lanka and his coronation. The production uses handmade sets, redesigned costumes, traditional lighting and verses from the Ramcharitmanas rather than modern visual effects. Its run concludes with ‘Ram Rajya’ on November 1.
