Thane permits only green crackers for Diwali, bars use after 10pm

Thane Municipal Corporation has banned firecrackers in public spaces and restricted their use to green crackers, with a nightly prohibition from 10pm to 6am.

Licensed sellers may operate only at sites approved by the civic body, while unauthorised roadside sales are prohibited. The order also bans laser, high-intensity and strobe lights at Diwali events and public processions.

Thane residents can use only green crackers this Diwali, and not between 10pm and 6am, under new directions issued by the Thane Municipal Corporation.

The civic body has prohibited firecrackers in public spaces including roads, main thoroughfares, lanes, footpaths and public grounds. It has also barred bursting crackers within 100 metres of silence zones such as hospitals, educational institutions, government offices and court complexes.

Crackers producing more than 125 decibels of noise cannot be produced, sold or used. Even people using permitted green crackers on private property must follow statutory noise limits.

Only licensed vendors with civic approval can sell crackers, and only from locations designated by the corporation. Roadside vending without authorisation is banned.

Laser lights, high-intensity beams and strobe lights are also prohibited during Diwali events and public processions. Organisers and procession leaders will be responsible for compliance at their venues.

The corporation said violations can draw action under noise-pollution, environmental, explosives and criminal laws. Residents can report violations through the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board helpline.
