Bengaluru Airport Road flyover restrictions bring peak-hour queues

Traffic queued for nearly a kilometre near Sanjeevininagar Cross on Friday as police began enforcing new vehicle restrictions on the Airport Road elevated corridor.

The Airport Road flyover is the only one of four corridors covered by the order where two-wheelers are barred. Police also stopped goods vehicles and autorickshaws from entering. At least 10 personnel were deployed at each flyover entrance to divert restricted vehicles. The other corridors covered by the order are BGS, Peenya and Double Decker.

Some two-wheeler riders entered through gaps in traffic. Police said they did not physically stop every rider because a fall on the busy stretch could be dangerous. Service lanes moved more smoothly, though diversions on the main road delayed traffic.

Police worked alternating three-hour shifts from 6am to 9pm. They said commuters would be given time to adjust to the diversions before stricter enforcement begins. AI-equipped cameras on the corridors will also be used to book no-entry violations, which carry a ₹500 penalty.

Police said 15 fatal crashes were recorded on the KIA elevated corridor stretch over 19 months.
