Maharashtra’s Transport Department has started training RTO staff to use 600 body-worn cameras supplied to 60 offices.
Navi Mumbai hosted body-camera training for staff from 10 MMR RTOs on November 4. Regular use will require a system to store and retrieve footage.
Two officials from each of 10 Regional Transport Office (RTO) offices in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region attended body-worn camera training in Navi Mumbai on November 4.
The cameras are intended for vehicle inspections and enforcement drives. The participating offices were Mumbai Central, Andheri, Wadala, Borivali, Thane, Panvel, Kalyan, Navi Mumbai, Pen and Mira-Bhayandar. Each office nominated a Motor Vehicle Inspector and an Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector.
The participants will train colleagues at their respective offices. Maharashtra’s Transport Department has supplied 600 cameras to 60 RTOs across the state, but the devices had not been deployed for more than two months.
Officials said the department did not have a process to store, manage and retrieve recorded video. The department plans regular deployment after the training, while a reliable video-storage system will be needed to preserve and access footage from enforcement operations.
