Shatarupa Bhattacharyya’s Silvatein moves from Bengaluru stage to the page

Bengaluru playwright and director Shatarupa Bhattacharyya has published *Silvatein – The Wrinkles in Time* as a book, giving the play a life beyond the theatre.

The English-language work centres on Rupali and Arijit, a couple whose accounts of their relationship do not always match. In its stage production, Ujani Ghosh played Rupali and Sagnik Sinha played Arijit. Puneet Gupta translated the play into Hindi.

Bhattacharyya said the move to print was prompted by the limits of live performance. “A performance lasts only as long as we are together in that room,” she said, adding that she wanted the writing to reach people who may not see the production on stage.

In book form, readers can return to earlier exchanges after learning more from either character and trace contradictions in their versions of the past. Bhattacharyya said she hoped the dialogue would retain the uncertainty that actors conveyed through pauses, glances and rhythm in performance.
