₹4 lakh announced for each family after Yamuna Expressway bus fire kills nine

Nine people died after a bus caught fire on the Yamuna Expressway, leaving families at a Noida post-mortem house to identify their relatives.

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced ₹2 lakh in ex-gratia for the family of each person who died. A further ₹2 lakh per family will be provided through the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund, taking the announced assistance to ₹4 lakh each.

Several people were injured in the fire and are receiving medical care. Police have arrested three people in connection with the case. Investigators are examining whether a short circuit caused the blaze; that cause has not been confirmed.

Identification of those who died has been difficult because of the extent of the burns, with some families relying on personal belongings and other clues at the post-mortem house.
