MMRDA has installed steel girders at Bharat Bijlee Junction in Airoli, advancing a 12.71-km elevated corridor planned to link Airoli, Mumbra and Katai Naka.
MMRDA is preparing to commission about 6 km between Thane-Belapur Road and NH-4 at Mumbra. The full corridor is expected to cut 7-8 km and 35-40 minutes from the Mulund-Katai Naka route.
At Bharat Bijlee Junction in Airoli, MMRDA has installed steel girders that will connect the Airoli-Katai Naka elevated road with Thane-Belapur Road.
The work involved curved girders weighing 95 tonnes and 110 tonnes on the down arms. It was carried out during overnight traffic blocks from October 9 to 11 in coordination with Navi Mumbai Traffic Police. The new arms are intended to provide direct entry and exit between Thane-Belapur Road and the elevated corridor.
MMRDA is preparing to open the first two phases together, creating an uninterrupted route from the Mulund-Airoli Bridge towards NH-4. Phase II, a 2.57-km elevated stretch from Airoli to Thane-Belapur Road, has been completed. The 3.43-km Phase I section between Thane-Belapur Road and NH-4 at Mumbra is in its final stages.
MMRDA estimates that the completed corridor will shorten the Mulund-Katai Naka trip by 7-8 km and save 35-40 minutes for motorists travelling between Thane and Navi Mumbai. The final 6.71-km section, from NH-4 to Katai Naka along Kalyan-Shil Road, is targeted for completion by October 2028.
