MCG plans sensors at 5,000 Gurugram sewer manholes to flag blockages early

The proposed system would send real-time alerts to MCG’s control room when sewage flow is obstructed or water levels rise inside a manhole.

MCG plans sensors at 5,000 Gurugram sewer manholes, starting in waterlogging-prone areas, to flag blockages and rising water levels.

MCG plans to fit 5,000 sewer manholes in Gurugram with sensors designed to alert civic teams before a blockage leads to an overflow.

The devices would track sewage flow and water levels inside manholes. When water crosses a prescribed level or flow is obstructed, the system would send an alert to the MCG control room, helping officials identify the location and deploy a response team.

The first installations will focus on waterlogging-prone locations. Gurugram has about 32,000 sewer manholes; MCG may take up the remaining sites in later phases after assessing the initial rollout.

MCG tested the system at 20 manholes for around six months and said the pilot was successful. Additional commissioner Yash Jaluka said work to expand the initiative has begun.

The corporation currently often learns of sewer faults through residents’ complaints or physical inspections. The proposed alerts are intended to reduce that delay, particularly during heavy rain, alongside MCG’s ongoing drain mapping work.
