The BMC ordered work to stop at 29 Mumbai construction sites in October and issued show-cause notices to 270 others over alleged pollution-control breaches.
Mumbai’s BMC issued 29 stop-work notices to construction sites in October over alleged breaches of pollution-control norms. It also issued 270 show-cause notices.
The action concerns sites that the civic body says did not comply with its pollution-control requirements. Construction dust can affect air quality for people living near or travelling past active building sites.
The BMC had earlier required developers to submit pollution-control undertakings with building approvals, making them responsible for compliance. It has also identified pollution hotspots across city wards. Mumbai’s pollution undertaking requirement and its ward-level hotspot plan are related measures.
The 29 sites must halt work under the BMC’s orders. The other 270 sites have been asked to respond to the show-cause notices.
