Mumbai stations to review train announcements after one-minute gaps

Central and Western Railway stations in Mumbai will review automated passenger information systems after the Railway Board found announcements for two trains on the same platform could be a minute apart.

The Railway Board has asked Central and Western Railway to review coordination between train enquiry, display and announcement systems at Mumbai stations.

A one-minute gap between announcements for two trains arriving at the same platform has prompted a review of passenger information systems at Mumbai railway stations.

The Railway Board said the issue emerged during station inspections, when officials found automated announcements for separate trains could be issued in quick succession. On busy platforms, particularly during peak hours, this can make it harder for passengers to identify the relevant train or platform update.

Railway Board member Vivek Kumar Gupta said the Board has directed the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and railway zones to review coordination between the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) and the Integrated Passenger Information System (IPIS). NTES supplies real-time train information, while IPIS uses it for automated station announcements and display boards.

Central Railway and Western Railway have been asked to examine IPIS installations at Mumbai stations with CRIS and the Research Designs and Standards Organisation. The review will focus on keeping display boards and announcements synchronised, including when two trains are scheduled for the same platform.
